This year marks the 40th anniversary of the legendary tennis match, “The Battle of the Sexes,” in which Billie Jean King beat self-proclaimed “male chauvinist pig” Bobby Riggs. The event drew 50 million television viewers in the United States and became a worldwide spectacle. She is King begins with an interview with King shortly after her victory. The first question posed by the male interviewer is, “Are you an angry woman?” With a knowing smile, King tracks her journey to world championship in the context of women’s liberation. She is King captures the legend’s big personality and subtle maneuvers during the following decade, as King manages the pressure of her success and of being a woman in a field long dominated by men. The use of interactive media magnifies the life of King as a public and private figure and examines the impact of media on gender, sexuality and celebrity. She is King presents a fascinating portrait of a woman who is a champion not only in tennis, but of a generation.

Support for She Is King provided by the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts as well as the Art Matters Foundation.

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the historic “Battle of the Sexes”, She Is King is a live performance that uses archival footage to recreate pivotal moments in the public life of tennis legend Billie Jean King. The piece begins with a 1973 interview with King shortly after her victory in the "Battle of the Sexes." The first question posed by the male interviewer is, “Are you an angry woman?” With a knowing smile, King tracks her journey to world championship in the context of women’s liberation. Through careful observation, She Is King captures the legend's big personality and subtle maneuvers as King navigates the pressure of her successes while battling an underlying tension between her marriage, sexuality and forceful exit from the closet in 1981. The piece reenacts three interviews, one conducted at height of King's career and two interviews shortly before and after her coming out. The use of archival footage and interactive media help juxtapose the life of King as a public and private figure and examine the impact of media on gender and sexuality. She Is King presents a fascinating portrait of a woman who is a champion not only in tennis, but of a generation.

Red Terror Squad's Family Bed is a kinetic album for the stage, written in the aftermath of an emotional fallout - both dreamed and real. The piece is grounded in the intermingling of recorded dream narratives to document our relationships (primarily using dreams about one another), layered with the stolen text of the great American rock band, Fleetwood Mac.
